Transforming Africa’s Agriculture Value Chains: what has Rwanda done to sustainably mechanize its agriculture?
The Malabo Montpellier Panel’s report, ‘Mechanized: Transforming Africa’s Agriculture Value Chains’ shows what can be done to sustainably mechanize African agriculture to increase production and enhance value addition across value chain segments. The report summarizes the findings of a systematic analysis of what countries have done right in terms of policy design, institutional innovation and interventions implemented and includes a case study on Rwanda mechanization success story. The set of policies and practices that are identified, if brought to scale, could have a significant impact on agricultural transformation in Africa.
The report shows that the progress shown by Rwanda over the last years reflects the Government’s dedication to strengthening each segment of the agriculture value chain through targeted mechanization interventions. Through an increased role of the private sector, an emphasis on research and skill development and the creation of village mechanization centers, the government emphasizes its commitment to rapidly mechanize its agriculture value chain.
In Rwanda, from 2005 to 2014, average agricultural output grew by more than five percent, while the average annual machinery growth rate was almost three percent. According to the 2018 Biennial Review Report by the African Union it was named as the best-performing country in implementing CAADP’s seven commitments.
What did Rwanda do differently?
What did it take to mobilize government at the cross-ministerial level?
How did buy-in from local organizations and government happen?
How funding mobilized to achieve the goal?
What are the practical lessons for other countries to bring their mechanization programs to scale?
During this webinar, Mr. Alain NZEYIMANA will answer these questions and discuss concrete practical steps that Rwanda has taken to put into action a set of winning program policies and partnerships to become a frontrunner in Africa mechanizing its agriculture.
This webinar will be of great interest to practitioners from ministries, government agencies, institutions, research analysts and students interested in understanding the work of governments, civil society, and the private sector in tackling some of the biggest challenges facing African countries.
